Wine and Chocolate: How to Pair These Two Guilty Pleasures Without a Taste Faux Pas

The Golden Rule: The Wine Must Match the Sweetness

The most common mistake? Opening a bottle of dry, tannic red wine to go with a bar of milk chocolate. The sugar in the chocolate will instantly "kill" the wine's fruitiness, making it taste sour and astringent. The golden rule is: The wine should be just as sweet, or slightly sweeter and more intense, than the chocolate.

Pairing Guide: Find Your Perfect Match

  • Dark Bio Chocolate (70%+ ) + Full-Bodied Organic Red Wines
A high cocoa percentage needs a robust partner. Look for full-bodied red wines with notes of ripe dark fruit and softer acidity. A great choice from our e-shop would be an aged organic Merlot, Malbec, or a rich Frankovka (Blaufränkisch). The richness of the chocolate softens the tannins, allowing the wine to open up beautifully.
  • White Chocolate + Aromatic or Oaked White Wines
White chocolate contains no cocoa solids, only cocoa butter, making it rich and sweet. It needs a wine that can cut through that creaminess. Try a full-bodied, oak-aged Chardonnay, which complements the chocolate with notes of vanilla and nutmeg, or reach for a semi-sweet organic Pálava or Gewürztraminer.
  • Milk Chocolate + Lighter Fruity Reds or Pinot Noir
Milk chocolate is high in sugar and dairy. Light, fruit-forward red wines with low tannins work best here, such as a natural Pinot Noir, or sweeter fortified wines.
  • Sea Salt or Chilli Chocolate + Orange and Natural Wines
If you love experimenting, try chocolate with a pinch of sea salt. The saltiness brilliantly highlights the texture of skin-contact orange wines or unfiltered natural bottles, suppressing bitterness and elevating the wine's fruit notes.

Host Your Own Tasting Night

Pairing is all about fun. First, let a piece of quality chocolate melt slowly on your tongue to coat your palate. Only then take a sip of wine. Watch how the flavors merge and transform.
